Answer Question 1
B, A, C but it’s very close, since soda contains on average 35g of added sugar, the equivalent of 7 pieces, juice 29g or 5.8 pieces, iced tea 26g or 5.2 pieces! On the other hand, a glass of water or homemade infusion contains no sugar.
Do not hesitate to count how many juices or sodas you consume in a week, and compare with the number of glasses of water. Maybe you can replace some drinks with water? What could help you do that? Have a water bottle in your bag, for example, or an access point (fountain…) to fresh water?
Answer Question 2
B, C, A. Baker’s bread contains only flour, water, salt and yeast, raw ingredients. A commercial crispy sandwich contains on average 4 to 5 ingredients depending on the recipe, so it is classified at level 3 of the NOVA scale of processed products. A slice of bread is classified level 4 and contains more than a dozen ingredients!
Do not hesitate to read the labels of the products you like to consume: if there are more than 5 ingredients and names of ingredients that you do not understand, it is probably a very processed product, which is therefore less good for health. Try to focus on foods you know the origin of, and incorporate them into your meals or snacks: picking up a baguette from the baker can become a ritual with your parents or after school, for example.
Answer Question 3
B, A, C. The “classic” chips have 1.1g of salt added per 100g, the sufflé snacks 2.4g per 100g (so more than double!) and the fries in the oven 0.4g per 100g, assuming of course that you do not add salt to the portion before eating… Even if chips are an ultra-processed food, they only have 4 or 5 ingredients versus a soufflé snack that contains more than a dozen, including many additives. Baked French fries have 16 ingredients, (unlike homemade French fries, made only of potato, oil and salt)!
Why do you like these foods? For their crunchiness? Could you not rediscover this feeling with other less salty and less processed foods? Make a list of other crunchy foods that you like, do not hesitate to compare on an application like Yuka or Open Food Facts their composition and salt content, to try to eat less salty.
Answer Question 4
A, C, B. Of course, the tomato alone has not been processed. A brick soup may seem like a “healthy” option, but industrial soups contain added salt (0.57g per 100ml here) and ingredients like cassava starch to thicken and give a more velvety texture… A passata contains only tomato and a little preservative, so it gets a 1 on the NOVA scale while the soup gets a NOVA score of 3, even if the product is organic.
Have you ever tasted a raw tomato? Did you like the taste of natural tomato? Could you imagine a simple recipe to turn tomato or coulis into soup? Perhaps by mixing the tomato with other ingredients (olive oil, spices, lemon juice…) in summer, or by heating tomato sauce with cream or spices in winter…
Answer Question 5
C, then tie for the two vegetable steaks. But beware, if options A and B are both classified with a NOVA score of 4 and are therefore ultra-processed foods, the bulgur-based steak A offers a Nutri-Score A and a list of «recognizable» ingredients (cereals, spices, vegetables, vegetable oils, etc.) Option B has more surprising additives, colors and ingredients (pea and rice protein, potato starch, pomegranate extract, etc.). Frozen ground steak contains only meat, so it has a Nova score of 1, even if its impact on the planet is more significant…
You may have heard that you need to reduce your meat consumption. If you want to eat a burger, do you prefer a classic steak or a vegetable steak? You may want to consider other options for your sandwich, such as grilling a nice slice of celeriac, eggplant or mushroom to replace the meat.
